New ESPN mock NBA Draft features five Wildcats

Five picks in a single draft would be Kentucky’s most since 2015.

ESPN has released a new mock 2024 NBA Draft and it features a total of five Kentucky players.

The updated ESPN mock projection for 2024 has two Wildcats going in the lottery, three in the first round and five total. The five picks in a single draft would be Kentucky’s most since 2015 and would tie 2010 for the second-most in the John Calipari era behind only 2012 and 2015 (6).

Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo have UK guard Rob Dillingham going No. 3 overall to the San Antonio Spurs, which would be Kentucky’s highest draft pick since De’Aaron Fox went No. 5 overall to the Sacramento Kings in 2017.

‌

It’s been a meteoric rise up the draft boards for Dillingham, who was once projected as an early second round pick by ESPN. Through 24 games, Dillingham is averaging 14.7 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 48.5% from the floor, 44.5% from 3-point range and 72.3% from the free throw line.

Known as one of the best isolation scorers in college basketball, he’s scored in double-figures in 20 of 24 games with five 20-point games, including a career-high 35 vs. No. 5 Tennessee, tied for the fourth-highest single game total by a freshman under Calipari at Kentucky.

‌

Dillingham ranks in the top 15 in the SEC in 3PFG% (fourth), assists per game (sixth), field goal percentage (10th), 3-point field goal percentage (12th) and points per game (15th).

ESPN has Reed Sheppard going 12th to the Chicago Bulls.

‌

One of only two Wildcats to appear in all 25 games this season, Sheppard is averaging 12.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.6 steals per game while shooting 52.6% from the field, 51.4% from 3 and 80.8% from the free throw line. He’s posted four 20-point scoring games and leads the SEC in both steals per game and 3-point field goal percentage while ranking fifth in assists per game and eighth in made 3s.

Sheppard is one of only seven players in school history with 50 threes, 50 steals, and 100 assists in a season.

ESPN also has DJ Wagner going in the first round at No. 27 to the Washington Wizards.

‌

Wagner is averaging 11.0 points, 3.5 assists, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.0 steals while starting 20 of the 21 games in which he’s appeared while battling back from a high ankle sprain suffered in December.

ESPN is projecting Ugonna Onyenso, who is averaging 5.9 points on 57.7% shooting, 6.9 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks in 24.3 minutes over his last seven games, at No. 38 to the Memphis Grizzlies. Onyenso leads the SEC in blocks per game and ranks third in total blocks despite missing the first nine games of the season while recovering from offseason foot surgery.

Once projected as a top-5 pick, Justin Edwards is slated at No. 51 to the Indiana Pacers. On the season, Edwards is averaging 8.1 points and 3.5 rebounds.

‌

Since 2010, no school has produced more No. 1 overall picks (3), top-10 picks (15), lottery picks (23), first round picks (35) and total NBA Draft picks (47) than Kentucky. Since the NBA went to a two-round draft in 1989, the Wildcats now have the most players drafted overall with 63, 46 of which have come in the first round. UK has also had at least one player drafted in 16 consecutive drafts, the longest active streak of any school, and a first round pick in 14 straight drafts, the longest streak in the common era. The Cats have produced multiple draft picks in 14 consecutive drafts.

No. 24 Kentucky claws back to beat Morehead State in home opener

After failing to cash in on early scoring opportunities, the No. 24 ranked Kentucky Baseball team won the hard way in its home opener Tuesday as it earned a 9-5 comeback win over the Morehead State Eagles at Kentucky Proud Park to move to 4-0 on the season.

UK squandered a chance to take an early lead as in the bottom of the first, it loaded the bases with nobody out but failed to cash in as Emilien Pitre bounced into a double-play and two batters later after a pitch hit James McCoy to re-load the bases, centerfielder Ty Crittenbergr grounded out to end the inning.

Sloppy defense helped Morehead State jump out to a 3-0 lead a few innings later as a throwing error by third basemen Nick Lopez, who made three errors in the contest, allowed Isaias Guzman to score in the top of the fourth and later in the frame, Nick Gooden who hit the ground ball to Lopez would come home to score on a sac-fly.

‌

In the top of the fifth, the Eagles executed a double-steal as catcher Austin Fawley threw down to second base trying to catch Colton Becker stealing, but his throw bounced into the turf allowing Ryley Preece to score from third and make it 3-0.

Down three after allowing Eagles starting pitcher Joe Rotkis to settle in, Kentucky began to rally back in the bottom of the fifth.

‌

Shortstop Grant Smith ripped an RBI single to cut the Morehead lead to 3-1, but later in the frame, with the bases loaded and one out, Devin Burks lined out to right fielder Hayden Robbins, who was able to gun down Smith, attempting to score at the plate ending the inning.

After both teams added a run in the sixth, Morehead’s lead sat at 5-2, entering the bottom of the eighth, where the Cats once again loaded the bases with one out. This time, Kentucky was the team to catch a break.

‌

Nolan McCarthy was able to draw a walk to make it 5-3. Morehead State would turn to Matt Bettio in relief and upon entering, he plunked pinch hitter Patrick Herrera to make it a 5-4 game.

With the score cut within one, Kentucky turned to small ball. Smith laid down a bunt that Morehead State failed to turn into an out and allowed Crittenbergr to score and tie the game at five. The next batter, Mitchell Daly, who replaced the struggling Lopez at third base, ripped an RBI single through the left side of the Eagle infield, allowing McCarthy to score and make it 6-5 Kentucky.

The next batter, Ryan Nicholson, delivered the dagger as he cleared the bases with a three-run double, extending UK’s lead to 9-5.

‌

Up four runs, right-handed reliever Johnny Hummel protected the lead for the Cats as he closed out the Eagles with a perfect top of the ninth.

Kentucky will be back in action Friday in Round Rock, Texas, where it will participate in the Karbach Round Rock Classic. It will face off with Washington State Friday at 3:00 p.m. EST, Texas State Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and Kansas Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the three-day event.
