Dallas Brannon grew up liking one of Tennessee’s SEC rivals. But that didn’t make him any less excited when his first trip to Knoxville earlier this month resulted in the Vols joining the list of teams in the running for him.

The Class of 2026 linebacker from Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C., visited Tennessee for the first time Feb. 3 to attend the Vols’ first junior day of the year, and he came away with a scholarship offer from them. It was the second SEC offer for Brannon, who’s the son of former Georgia tight end Robert Brannon.

The younger Brannon said he’s already planning to return to Tennessee in the coming months, and he was happy to get an offer from the Vols.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia — Virginia’s free-throw futility left the door open, but confusion and poor execution in the waning seconds prevented the Demon Deacons (16-9, 8-6) from capitalizing, resulting in a 49-47 Cavalier (20-6, 11-4) victory Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena.

After missing their first 10 foul shots, Isaac McKneely made the second of two attempts with 6.7 seconds remaining to give UVA what turned out to be the final margin. The Hoos are the worst free-throw shooting team in ACC play, but still hit greater than 65 percent, even after today’s debacle, so missing their first 10 in a row gave the Deacs life despite a smothering Cavalier defensive effort.

As the McKneely foul shot went through the net, all four Deacs lined up for the rebounds walked toward center court, with nobody going back to inbound the ball.

With no timeouts left to collect the offense for a final play, Wake Forest center Efton Reid pointed at guard Cam Hildreth as if instructing him to retrieve and inbound the ball.

Hildreth, looking really at noone, also points toward the baseline.

Finally, Hunter Sallis grabs the ball and tosses it in to Hildreth, who goes coast to coast in the final seconds, taking a highly-contested baseline fall-away jumper that bounces off the opposite side of the rim as time expires, leaving Wake Forest just shy yet again of a much-needed ACC road victory.

According to Wake Forest coach Steve Forbes, that’s a situation that’s practiced often and the play wasn’t designed for Hildreth.

10 biggest NFL draft busts in Tennessee football history

The Tennessee Volunteers have produced many legendary players into the NFL, but a few early draft picks had careers that didn’t pan out after leaving Knoxville.

After a resurgent season in 2022, Tennessee produced Darnell Wright, the No. 10 overall pick to the Chicago Bears, and four more players who were selected on Day 2 of the draft. However, 2023 didn’t go nearly as well for Josh Heupel’s Volunteers, and that will likely be reflected in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Even without any Vols projected to be selected in the first round and only three players heading to the NFL combine in Indianapolis, it’s still worth looking back at the biggest draft busts in Tennessee history.

Not every first-round pick, especially every first-round quarterback can be Peyton Manning. Joe Milton III won’t be selected high enough to break a team’s heart, but Tennessee has had highly-drafted quarterbacks who did. So, let’s dig into the list and see if the QB who went No. 3 overall pick in the 1994 NFL draft ranks as Tennessee’s biggest NFL draft bust in program history.

Kelly was an elite linebacker across his four-year career in Knoxville, but he didn’t translate to the NFL. In his first season with San Francisco, he played just 14 games, only starting five of them, and registering one sack and 15 tackles.

Despite how underwhelming that 1993 season was, it may have been his best as a pro. In 1994, he played 11 games and finished with 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, but just nine tackles and only started one game.

Kelly earned a Super Bowl ring as the 49ers defeated the Chargers that postseason, but he was cut before 1995 and claimed by Cincinnati.

Kelly did not start another game in the NFL after his first two seasons in San Francisco and after four seasons he had played on three teams (San Francisco, Cincinnati, and Atlanta) and had racked up 5.5 sacks, and 27 tackles.

His career in the NFL did not amount to much, but he doesn’t check in higher on this list because he was taken near the end of the first round, and San Francisco was still able to win a championship two years after making the mistake.
